Overall Objectives
Company is building a data warehouse. This data warehouse is primarily designed to support subsurface reservoir characterization applications, most of which have a strong component of domain-specific technical detail in geosciences and petroleum engineering. Everyone involved must be keenly aware that our applications are not standard "business/enterprise" data such as transaction records, etc. Our data warehouse is used to organize, deliver, and integrate large amounts of physical measurements about the subsurface rocks and the history of the producing wells.
An everyday analogy of our applications are not unlike the business of hurricane forecasting. We have near-real time field data (measurements of temp., pressure, and wind speed at ground stations and from aircraft), and we have remote sensing data (radar and satellite data). We have a large historical database that captures a variety of different information about the past behavior of hurricanes and the damage caused to humans by each one. We also have a wide array of conceptual, statistical, and numerical models, typically implemented on very specialized computer hardware and software. The data integration challenge is to bring these data and modeling resources together and then communicate a timely and actionable forecast.
Role of Spotfire
In order for our business to take advantage of the data warehouse, it must be able to do useful things for the scientists and engineers that have access to it. In addition to other tools, we are planning to use TIBCO Spotfire as several key links in the chain between the data and the creation of actionable knowledge from our scientists and engineers. We have already demonstrated how Spotfire can do several things for the project:
1.Give easy access to the raw data to the users in a format that is good for users. The means anyone can see views of the data that make sense to them in the spotfire webplayer, and spotfire users can access data though the Spotfire InfoLinks.
2. Enable general data exploration, using Spotfire's visualization features to experience the data and create displays that would be difficult or impossible to create with our existing technical softwares.
3. Deliver pre-defined data analysis capabilities that relive the user from having to implement and understand data analysis maths but still let them use advanced data analysis as part of their overall job as data integrators.
4. Share and document learnings from the data into Spotfire documents, Bookmarks, Tags, and Lists
Thanks and Regards
